Pursuing Authentic Intelligence & Accessible Neural Interfaces

We are a student-led research lab focused on developing systems that move beyond statistical pattern recognition toward actual machine understanding. Our work integrates theoretical computer science, computational neuroscience, and embedded systems to investigate the foundations of intelligence and build functional cognitive architectures.

Current AI systems operate as high-dimensional interpolators with no real grasp of semantics or causality. At Shunya, we aim to create architectures that exhibit agency, continuity of self, and adaptive behavior through self-supervised learning, attention control, and embodied interaction.

Our Research Branches

Conscious AI Systems

We're developing cognitive architectures that move beyond the transformer paradigm, exploring mechanisms for consciousness emergence, and investigating the theoretical foundations of machine understanding.

Coming Soon: Our first research paper on the definition of intelligence and consciousness in artifical systems, releasing for preprint by end of May 2025.

Brain-Computer Interfaces

Our BCI vertical aims to make brain-controlled prosthetics more affordable and accessible for people in India through home-grown hardware solutions.

We're also developing tech-based solutions for neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD and exploring new paths for cognitive enhancement.

Current Projects

BIOS-r0 — Proof and definition of intelligence (currently WIP)
Neural Interface Prototype — Low-cost BCI hardware for accessibility (in development)
